Author's Note: I found symbolic meanings in a short story with two other people. This is what we wrote.
It rained. This is a sentence that has to do with symbolism because "it rained" represents the seven years it was cloudy and disgusting with water dripping from the roofs of houses.
Sometimes, at night, she heard them stir, in remembrance, and she knew they were dreaming and remembering gold or a yellow crayon or a coin large enough to buy the world with. The crayon and the coin represent the sun. Margot was waiting for the sun because she remembered it. All the other kids wouldn't have remembered when they saw the sun.
It was a nest of octopi, clustering up great arms of flesh like weed, wavering, flowering in this brief spring. This represents the jungle that covers the entire surface of Venus.
The children lay out, laughing, on the jungle mattress, and heard it sigh and squeak under them resilient and alive. This is a symbol of happiness. After seven years, the sun finally shows, so the children are happy.
A few cold drops fell on their noses and their cheeks and their mouths. The sun faded behind a stir of mist. A wind blew cold around them. They turned and started to walk back toward the underground house, their hands at their sides, their smiles vanishing away. This is a symbol of sadness. After being happy, the sun vanishes again for seven more years.
She began to cry. This is a symbol of sadness because the sun drifted away for another seven years.
"You're lying, you don't remember!" cried the children. This is a symbol of anger because they don't believe Margot even though she is telling the truth.
"Get away!" The boy gave her another push. This is a symbol of anger. Margot was being pushed by the boy
